Is MIKE MANGINI The New DREAM THEATER Drummer?

According to Eddie Trunk — co-host of the VH1 Classic television program “That Metal Show” who has a long-running radio show, “Friday Night Rocks”, on New York’s Q104.3 FM — Mike Mangini, the 47-year-old session artist who has played for ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE and STEVE VAI, is strongly rumored to have joined DREAM THEATER as the replacement for the recently departed Mike Portnoy.

Mangini is notorious for his technical prowess and holds three out of four World’s Fastest Drummer titles. These include the Fastest Matched grip at 1,247 strokes in 60 seconds; Fastest Hands, which he earned by executing 1,203 single-stroke notes in 60 seconds without drumsticks mallets etc.; Fastest Traditional Grip which he earned by executing 1,126 strokes in 60 seconds; and Fastest Single Stroke Foot record, playing 13,222 hits in 15 minutes and 5,222 hits in five minutes.

Mangini has written two books about his drumming techniques. These books, titled “Rhythm Knowledge”, are a practice method for deconstructing and simplifying complex polyrhythms and time signatures.

Mangini joined ANNIHILATOR in 1991 and appeared on the band’s “Set The World On Fire” album. He toured with the group in support of the CD until 1994 at which point he was asked to play with the Massachusetts band EXTREME, replacing that group’s original drummer Paul Geary.

After EXTREME dissolved in 1996, Mike was informed through drummer Jonathan Mover that guitarist Steve Vai was auditioning drummers for his live band. Mike successfully auditioned for Steve Vai’s band and relocated to Los Angeles.

From late 1996 to early 2000, Mangini was the highly regarded drummer of Vai’s live ensemble, which also included bassist Philip Bynoe, guitar wizard Mike Keneally and (in 2000) guitarist Dave Weiner. Mike also recorded several drum tracks for Steve’s “Fire Garden” and “Ultrazone” albums.

In 2005, Mike accepted a full-time teaching position at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and today he is a prominent faculty member in the school’s percussion department.

Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER more than 20 years ago, abruptly quit the band last summer while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD.

He played on AVENGED SEVENFOLD’s latest album, “Nightmare”, following the death of that band’s drummer, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, and toured with them in late 2010 .

Next Lamb Of God Album To Sound Like Burn The Priest?

Chris Adler speaks out on what you can expect from the next Lamb Of God album!

Lamb Of God drummer Chris Adler has spoken to Revolver about what you can expect from the band’s soon to be recorded new album.

“I know that there’s a lot of material that the guitar players have already demoed and put down in our little basement studios. I’ve heard some of it. It’s really cool and very different. It reminds me of when we were Burn The Priest, a lot of the bands we’d play with had this kind of big sound. It’s going to be interesting.

“But as of right now we still haven’t started getting together at all with trying to rip it apart and put it back together the way we do with the band. So it’s really hard to tell what’s going to come of it. But the plan is to work on it throughout this year and try to have things in a row by the end of the year.”

Corey Taylor Autobiography Details in Full

The memoirs of the Slipknot/Stone Sour legend are on the way. Get everything you need to know inside!

Corey Taylor will release his autobiography on July 12th. Set to be titled ‘The Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad And Damaged Good’, the press release for the book reads: “For the first time, Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor speaks directly to his fans and shares his worldview about life as a sinner. And Taylor knows how to sin. As a small-town hero in the early ’90s, he threw himself into a fierce-drinking, drug-abusing, hard-loving, live-for-the moment life.

“Soon Taylor’s music exploded, and he found himself rich, wanted, and on the road. His new and ever-more extreme lifestyle had an unexpected effect, however; for the first time, he began to actively think about what it meant to sin and whether sinning could–or should–be recast in a different light. Seven Deadly Sins is Taylor’s personal story, but it’s also a larger discussion of what it means to be seen as either a “good” person or a “bad” one. Yes, Corey Taylor has broken the law and hurt people, but, if sin is what makes us human, how wrong can it be?”

Slipknot Announce Bassist For Upcoming Shows

Slipknot have announced who will be playing bass for them on their upcoming tour dates. Get tickets for this year’s Sonisphere here!

For their upcoming shows in 2011, Slipknot have asked former guitarist Donnie Steele to fill in for Paul Gray on bass.

Slipknot’s statement reads: “Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family. Donnie was great friends with Paul and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate his memory than with someone who was there with us at the very beginning. The eight of us are looking forward to being onstage again and honoring Paul’s legacy with our families in Europe and Brazil this summer.”

Sonisphere 2011 will take place at Knebworth on July 8th – 10th and will be headlined by Metallica and the big four, Biffy Clyro and Slipknot with performances also confirmed from Weezer, Limp Bizkit, Architects, Motorhead, Airbourne, Sisters Of mercy, Mastodon, Volbeat, Gallows, In Flames and Parkway Drive. Limp Bizkit To Release Two New Albums

Like buses, you wait ages for one and then two come along at once. Get the full story inside!

Limp Bizkit are preparing to release two brand new albums. The eagerly-anticipated Gold Cobra is expected to drop sooner rather than later, with the Summer being the latest the album will arrive, but Fred Durst’s Twitter suggests that, quite literally, only tells half the story.

His Tweet reads: “Obviously we have two albums here, in case you didn’t pick up on that. First one is Gold Cobra. Due soon.”

Sonisphere 2011 will take place at Knebworth on July 8th – 10th and will be headlined by Metallica and the big four, Biffy Clyro and Slipknot with performances also confirmed from Weezer, Limp Bizkit, Architects, The Mars Volta, Motorhead, Airbourne, Sisters Of Mercy, Opeth, Mastodon, Volbeat, Gallows, Killing Joke, In Flames and Parkway Drive

Amon Amarth Cover System Of A Down

We know that this track has floated around for a while but Viking metallers Amon Amarth’s cover of System Of A Down classic, ‘Aerials’, is being offered as a bonus cut with certain packages of the band’s new album, ‘Surtur Rising’. Feast your ears on the brilliance inside! Get tickets to see the return of System Of A Down at this year’s Download festival.

Children Of Bodom’s Alexi Laiho: “I’m Backstage Puking Blood With A Broken Shoulder And Broken Ribs Listening To The Crowd Chant ‘Bullshit!’”

Chaos is hanging out with Children Of Bodom and gets the real story behind the cancelleation of their tour…

Over the years one weird thing that has been consistent at Children of Bodom shows for me, is that when Bodom is playing my area I always manage to show up just in time to go backstage for a few minutes prior to Alexi going on. This time would be no different. After the show in true COBHC hospitality, I was invited on the bus to hang out and catch up.

We all remember on the last tour for Blooddrunk, Alexi had an unfortunate accident that left him pretty busted up. A true testament to determination, Alexi decided to continue on with the tour.

“I did ten and a half shows. We had to cut it short in New York. There was nothing I could to do continue, it was so fucking painful. Everybody around me was concerned. Randy Blythe told me he knows I’m not a pussy and I wanted to continue playing, but he told me not to do this shit to myself. I told him, fuck man, I’m going to do this till’ the fucking day I die. But here’s what happened. Picture this dude, there we were in New York, the biggest show of the tour and I had to quit half way through. Now I’m backstage puking blood with a broken shoulder and broken ribs listening to the crowd chant ‘Bullshit’. I don’t blame them, they didn’t know what was going on. One of the Municipal Waste dudes went out on stage and explained what was going on. At least I fucking tried dude. I did ten fucking shows all fucking beaten up.”

Some people embrace being considered a guitar god or hero, where as others may experience feeling pressure and overwhelmed by the whole idea.

“For me it’s a great fucking feeling. I don’t feel any pressure, that’s not what it’s about. At the end of the day it’s all about the music, the music you write, the music you play, the music you feel. I’m blessed to be voted a few times as the number one guitar player by one of the biggest guitar magazines in the world.”

I mentioned that Kirk Hammet thinks he is underrated.

“Fuck, that means a lot to me. I grew up learning all the Metallica songs… that truly does mean a lot to me. Just like Roope [Latvala], he was a huge musical influence on me growing up. Sometimes when we’re on stage and I look over at Roope I think, holy fuck that’s the guy I grew up listening to, this is fucked. He’s a great guy. He’s one of my favorite people and one of my favorite musicians of all time… the guy’s a fucking genius. We’re lucky to have the best guitar player in Finland with us.”

When it comes to extreme music, most people do not seem to think there is any place for humor. Alexi is a funny dude, and jumps at the chance to get silly and have a laugh. Is it important to keep grounded and down to earth?

“I think it is. Not too many people may agree with me. Most of the musicians I grew up listening to were actually able to laugh at themselves. If you take yourself too seriously, then that’s just uncool.”

Alexi told me he has just got a place in LA with his girlfriend and is splitting his time between LA and back home. Most people may not be aware, but Alexi has a second female in his life…His 74′ Dodge Monaco named ‘Monica’.

“I wish I could be with her right now. She’s in a heated garage. Actually in our new practice space. It’s fucking huge. We could park ten cars in there. Way better than our old space. The old space had no insulation against sound. You could hear all these other bands playing clearly. It was impossible to write a song there.”

Did he see any on this tour?
“Dude I don’t want to talk about it…come on dude. That shit gets me, it gets me depressed. I don’t
want to be depressed. Everybody has something weird like that. Another thing I have is a sleeping
disorder. I’ve tried all kinds of shit. I tried hypnosis, but nothing works. Lack of sleep really
hurts the body.

We continued talking about lack of sleep being tough on the body which led to a discussion on health overall. That inevitably brought us to remembering all the great people the metal world has lost in recent times, and the fact that we almost lost Zakk a few times.

“We are so happy Zakks back and he’s OK, it’ fucking scary. Sometimes you think people are made of
steel. It could happen to any of us at anytime. It’s important to be aware of the signs and get checked
out. I feel like shit most of the time and am used to suffering, it might be difficult for me to notice any
signs.”

Just as I was feeling warm and fuzzy about bugging Alexi, Right Said Fred’s epically ridiculous hit ‘I’m too sexy’ popped up on VH1 classic. Alexi’s keen instincts honed in on my loathing for that fucking song. So he stood up and cranked the fucking volume to eleven. Check mate Alexi, check fucking mate. I mentioned my bewilderment of the songs success. Alexi thought it was a comedy bit like ‘I like big butts’ by Sir-mix-alot. No shit, not ten fucking seconds later… you guessed it, the video for ‘I like big butts’ came over the telly. We all lost our shit.

Metallica To Enter The Studio In April

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich Danish has spoken to a Danish newspaper about the band’s plans for 2011…

On when the band plans on returning to the studio to begin work on the follow-up to 2008’s “Death Magnetic”:

“There’s a really good vibe in the band at the moment. In the past, we would be fed up with METALLICA whenever we returned home after a gigantic world tour, but this time it’s different. Therefore it won’t be that long before we start working on a new album. I think that we’ll probably already get the creative process going in March or April and go into the studio. We really want to get back to METALLICA quickly because we are enjoying it so much right now.”

On how the relationship between the METALLICA bandmembers has changed over the years:

“It helps our relationships that we’ve all got families and children and they all get along with each other. We really fucking like each other at the moment. There were a few years when things were really bad. We never really got to talk to each other; we would just grab a bottle of vodka and go out looking for girls. That meant that we weren’t sharing our feelings with each other. Today we talk a lot about our children and our families. And the fact that we have something to talk about other than tonight’s setlist is or if someone made a mistake during yesterday’s show makes a big difference. In the last five or six years, we’ve found out where our limits are and we’ve made some rules regarding METALLICA. That’s been necessary in order to make sure the entire thing doesn’t collapse. For instance, we have a rule that we cannot be on the road for more than two weeks at a time during the school year and we make sure that we spend two weeks at home before going back on tour. That prevents us from burning out and falling into the trap that you can sometimes fall into when you are tired and worn out.”

Amon Amarth: “We Were Interested In A New Sound”

US-based Hammer scribe Chaos is out with his pals Amon Amarth, and here’s what they had to say about the acoustic guitars and synthesizers…

Well it is that time once again when the long ships of the Viking – Death – metal Kings, [Amon Amarth] have set sail to crash the UK and North American shores, for highly anticipated tours. Their newest offering ‘Surtur Rising’ is with out a doubt at or above par with the quality of the crushing Viking inspired death metal we have come to know, love and expect from these Swedish metal masters.
I received a call from Johan .S the other day to chat a bit about the new album and upcoming tours…

Over the years, Johan .S and Olavi .M have become renowned for their ability to fuse such beautiful melodies with truly brutal music. With this in mind, I asked Johan what his writing credits consisted of on ‘Surtur Rising’. ‘We don’t believe in giving credit to individual band members. They are the bands songs so the whole band receives the credit. It doesn’t matter who did what.’. I thought to myself, maybe this has some merit regarding the bands longevity.

Amon Amarth worked with producer Jens Bogren on 2008’s epic album ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’, where he [Bogren] was able to convince the band to step out of their comfort zone, which met with astounding results. Why fix something that isn’t broken…right?
‘Yeah…but we were thinking about working with a different producer because we were interested in a new sound and again wanted to challenge ourselves not to resort to what we know and are familiar with. We [Amon Amarth] had a meeting with Jens where he assured us that it would not be a clone of the last album. It was cool that we got to record at numerous different studios at many diverse locations. The drums were recorded in Stockholm for instance. I do love working with Jens. It makes it a smoother process when you get to know someone and forge a friendship…makes it much easier I think.’.

When I first spun ‘Surtur Rising’ and heard ‘For Victory or Death’, it was like déjà vu. Remember when Iron Maiden’s ‘Seventh Son’ first came out?[or the first time you heard it] I don’t know about you, but me and my mates were almost reduced to tears when we heard keyboards on this album. Low and behold, what I thought would be the bane of Maiden, instead became one of their most beloved albums and still my favorite if I have to chose. Needless to say after a few listens, I came to terms with the fact that I may still be the same idiot I was when I was 15, but could not resist asking Johan ‘What’s up with the keyboard intro on ‘For Victory or Death?’
‘I think it was Jens idea…but it’s a guitar run through a chorus pedal, or something like that.’ I mention how different it is for AA. ‘Yes, and another thing we have never done until now is use acoustic guitars.’
So now all doubt has been removed, I am still the same idiot I was when I was 15… there is much to be said for maintaining an open mind.

It appears that more and more metal bands are including bonus tracks on albums. Some will say that it’s to help procure record sales, but for some it’s more an opportunity to pay homage to bands and songs that made a significant impact on the music they make and lives in general.
The ‘deluxe’ version of ‘Surtur Rising’ has the bonus tracks: ‘War Machine’[KISS] and ‘Balls to the Wall’[Accept], with the itunes version adding ‘Aerials’[System of a Down]. Who chose these songs?
‘I chose the ‘Balls to the Wall’ cover. ‘Aerials’ is a song that we [Amon Amarth] like to sing on the tour bus when we drink, also when we were in Japan, the whole band went up and sang it for Karaoke. It’s such a fun song, that’s why we chose it.’ I asked if there was any footage available. [Laughs] ‘Yeah, I actually have some really good footage of it on my laptop. I’ll show you when I see you on tour. We put all of our efforts into our new songs first. We knew we had to do three bonus tracks, but to be honest not much planning went into it.’

As of yet, only the US is slated to witness the band perform ‘Surtur Rising’ in it’s entirety. By Odin’s beard, there must be plans to do the same throughout the rest of the world?!?
‘No solid plans yet…following the US tour we have our European tour which we will have support acts. We will play some songs off the new album but not the whole thing. If it feels great in America, we’ll do it again. ‘

Amon Amarth will be pillaging Norwich April 1st. What can UK fans expect in contrast? ‘Children of Bodom’ are headlining and we are support. Our set will be forty-five minutes and we’ll include some songs off the new album, but it will be a totally different set.’
Before you hack off your battle-beards, burn your long ships, and toss all battle garb into the ocean in haste…remember: the US has NEVER seen a true ‘Full’ Amon Amarth spectacle with long ships on stage along with fire-breathing dragons and of course full on battle re-enactments in tow.

Don’t miss the bos tear up one of these venues as they provide direct support for Children of Bodom. [also with support from Ensiferum & Machinae Supremacy]

Megadeth Bassist Dave Ellefson Jr. Explains His Return To Megadeth

Band Photo: Megadeth (?)

Who would ever thought that David Ellefson would return to Megadeth after the sour note in 2003? The music industry, and in particular the band member relationships, are very complex. The music industry can be forgiving, indifferent, and downright cruel at times. Fortunately, when it comes to Megadeth there is always the opportunity to rebuild the once burned bridges when it comes to band member relationships.

Daniel Becker: How did this reunion transpire? You said over the weekend you got a phone call. So Mustaine was like 'Dave, you in?" How did it exactly happen? Was there any initial apprehension at first?

David Ellefson: Shawn Drover contacted me via text that a member change was going to happen and that Dave and I should talk IMMEDIATELY. He is first and foremost a fan of MEGADETH music and can see the "forest from the trees", meaning that if a change was going to happen it would be ideal to bring me back into the fold, especially for the "Rust In Peace" tour. From there Dave and I spoke on the phone and our years of estrangement disappeared very quickly. I drove over to CA to rehearse and it all clicked, it sounded great!

Becker: Some fans say that stepping back into Megadeth is a questionable move after years of lawsuits and ill-feelings between yourself and Mustaine. Do you think that Mustaine has changed back from how he was before?

Ellefson: Musically, we are clicking really good and at this point we are taking things a day at a time so we can rebuild our friendship, too. I think that is as important now as just playing the notes.

Becker: In a recent post you made on Megadeth.com about your return to Megadeth and playing again with Mustaine you said "We have a special style we've created over the years and it just fell back into place instantly." Granted, many fans have no doubt that the good feelings will definitely return, but are you concerned about the negatives that might result from this?

Ellefson: Sure, we have many years of personal history, but musically we are feeling good about this first trek out for the "Rust In Peace" record. Again, we're taking it as it comes and not getting too far ahead of ourselves.

Becker: As an author on the subject of music business, does the irony of this reunion reinforce your views that metal and the music industry are a complex business?

Ellefson:Yes, it is a bizarre business, for sure! At the end of the day, there is music, there is business and most importantly there are people who make ALL of that happen. They all have to work together in order for it to really happen, and that is the trick of it all.

Becker:Do you know the events that led up to Mustaine dismissing James Lomenzo? Many fans speculate that because of the Rust in Peace retro tour, it was justified to bring back the backbone of that album. Do you think that this was the natural progression? That is, to serve the purpose of the album for the better?

Ellefson:I really don't know what that led up to the change, I'm just tending to my side of it which is moving forward.

Becker: What are going to happen to Hail, F5, and the newest album from Angels of Babylon now that you are a full time member?

Ellefson: The thing that makes my return to MEGADETH is that I've had several years of doing some new music, as well as things that have helped me grow as a player and as a person. While I may have limited time to work on those bands now I still like the idea of having other musical outlets away from MEGADETH from time to time to continue to grow an expand what I can then bring back to the benefit of everyone. I think it's healthy as a musician to do that.

Becker: Many fans are confused that this reunion is only for the Rust in Peace retro tour, can you please lay that rumor to rest and acknowledge you are a full time member?

Ellefson: We agreed that we would start with this tour and assuming all goes well we roll forward with everything else. While we all make big plans and have high hopes, we also agree staying in the moment has brought us great results this past week and that should be the plan on how we move forward, too. I think it alleviates the pressure and helps us to really enjoy the process, not just the end result.

Becker: Are you as fluent now on the Rust in Peace album, or will you need to start practicing more? Also, have you been learning the new songs, and are you going to add some improvisation to some of the songs?

Ellefson: I've played these songs a bit over the years, just to stay fresh on them. They are part of my legacy and I always want to be able to play things if someone asks for them. With that said, the RIP album is one of the most difficult metal albums ever written!

Interview An Interview With Black River/BEHEMOTH Bassist Tomasz “Orion” Wroblewski

Band Photo: Behemoth (?)

Tomasz “Orion” Wroblewski is best known as the bassist for extreme metal icons Behemoth. He is also the leader of symphonic black metal band Vesania, but his most unique side-project is the stoner/black n’ roll Black River. Fans of Orion’s other projects will definitely be surprised by how much groove the music has, and he seems to fit in just as well with this as he does with the more rambunctious Behemoth. Also featuring drummer Dariusz "Daray" Brzozowski of Dimmu Borgir and Vader fame, the band has just released their second album, “Black'n'Roll,” which is also the first look many in the U.S will get of the band. I recently had the chance to speak to Orion about Black River's new album, the current situation with Nergal, and what the future holds for Orion while he plays the waiting game with both Black River and Behemoth.

Heavytothebone2: Black River used to be called Neolithic. Why did the band change their name to Black River? How did that change happen?

We recorded an album with Neolithic and during the recording session, we changed everything in the band. We changed half of the line-up and the music just evolved in some different way than it used to be. When we were listening to the record, we just decided we need to form a new band. We already have these new members in the band and we decided to change the name.

Heavytothebone2: Why the name Black River? Is there any symbolism behind the name?

Well, there’s nothing behind it, as far as I know. It was Kay’s idea, the band’s leader, and we all agreed to that. There’s no story behind it.

Heavytothebone2: What are the band’s influences in how the sound came?

It’s anything from old rock bands, old rock metal bands to stoner rock bands. Anything that we were always listening to that we always wanted to play, but weren’t able to play that in the extreme bands we were in.

Heavytothebone2: You mentioned playing in extreme bands. Does the stoner style of music come naturally to you? Did it take a little bit of time to get adjusted to?

We didn’t adjust to anything. We were always interested in playing such music. There was no actual band we could play this music in. It just happened. It was the flow of the feeling that we had. Black River is a group of good friends and we just wanted to do it always and finally we did it. This band exists; we’re just waiting for the vocalist to recover. You probably heard the story about his illness. As soon as he is back on track, we can proceed with the band.

Heavytothebone2: Do you know how long that is going to take?

No idea for now. It could be months; could be half a year. It’s another serious story. You might have heard about Nergal too. There’s some bad omen over me.

Heavytothebone2: Black River is quite different than Behemoth. What do you get out of this that you may not out of Behemoth?

Behemoth is my job and that’s a stressful thing. That’s the band that takes up a lot of time and a lot of sacrifices in personal life and all that. Black River is just a group of friends with the same kind of feelings. When we do Black River, we just meet and we have a lot of fun together, have a lot of fun playing. There’s no stress, no tight schedules, no nothing. That’s some kind of releasing of the other stress we have with all these other bands. That’s what I get out of it; it’s just a lot of fun.

Heavytothebone2: “Black'n’Roll” is the band’s sophomore album. What was the recording process like? Was it smoother than the debut album?

As I said before, the first one was a long process with changing the band’s members and everything. The second one was an easy story, I guess. We did all the songs during the rehearsals. We entered the studios. We had good friends working as sound engineers. It was just an easy thing. It happened within not even a month. There’s nothing either interesting or stressful that happened during the recording session. It was, as I’ve said with this band, it was just fun. That’s how it was during the recording; a lot of alcohol and listening to good music and sound recordings.

Heavytothebone2: From a songwriting perspective, what is the main difference between this and the self-titled debut?

I don’t know. We are just a little more experienced with all the tours we’ve done with Black River, but I would say it’s still the same thing. There’s no trying to be original behind it or nothing like that. It sounds better and it’s got better songs on it, but that’s it.

Heavytothebone2: Are there any tracks that stand out for you more so than others?

Personally, I’m a fan of the cover song that we did (“Jumping Queeney Flash”), which is a weird thing for all the people who are writing reviews of the album. That’s the track that I like the most.

Heavytothebone2: Where did the idea come to even try to attempt to put “God Save The Queen” and “Jumping Jack Flash” together?

It happened a long time ago. It was just a spontaneous thing. We were trying to do a cover song and we changed a lot of it and Taff, the vocalist, just added some extra lyrics into it. It just happened in the rehearsal. I don’t remember the kind of alcohol that we were under the influence of (laughs), but that’s pretty much it.

Heavytothebone2: The song seems to be missing from the U.S release, is that correct?

Are you asking if there are any songs missing on the U.S release?

Heavytothebone2: Yeah, because that song is missing, correct? Am I incorrect?

Yeah, yeah, there’s one song that is not included on the U.S record. There’s a few more that we recorded during this recording session and we were planning to release the EP soon, which would include all these songs that are missing plus some live footage that we recorded during some tours. But after Taff being sick, we’re forced to cancel all further touring, so the EP is not going to include anything new on it.

Heavytothebone2: Is anything going to happen to the new tracks? Are they just going to be part of the next album?

With all the next work, we have to wait until Taff recovers. We can’t make any plans at the moment. We’re just waiting for this guy to be back on track.

Heavytothebone2: The first album never got released in the U.S. Are they any plans to release it?

We don’t really know for now. When we recorded this one and released it in Poland, we were trying to find a label anywhere outside of Poland, and for some reason, it didn’t happen. We were sending it out to anyone in the world, but nobody wanted to have it. Hopefully, with all that is happening with “Black'n'Roll” in the U.S, maybe it will cause the release of the first one, but nothing is happening in this matter at the moment.

Heavytothebone2: Do you think there is any specific reason why the first album hasn’t really catched on?

I have no idea. I don’t really know. I don’t know. Well, I can’t really see the big difference between the first one and the second one. So yeah, I don’t know.

Heavytothebone2: With all that has happened, with Black River on hold for the time being and Behemoth as well, are you doing anything else on the side to keep yourself busy?

Well, now I have a lot of free time. So I’m trying to think about reorganizing my whole life, because it seems that I have to try to either find a regular job or doing anything besides playing. I’m thinking about musical production or mastering, so that what’s I’m starting to think about now and what I’m working at. Hopefully, something comes out of it in the nearest future.

Heavytothebone2: Are you worried about the future of Behemoth?

I’m worried about Nergal, first of all. That’s a serious thing, his illness. With the band, we’re still active because we will be releasing the DVD now and working with some other stuff to be released too. I’m not really worried about the band; I’m worried about the guy, about a good friend who is in really bad condition at the moment. That’s the first thing that has to happen; he needs to recover.

Heavytothebone2: How did you learn the news about Nergal?

Well, he was feeling really bad for a few weeks, and he didn’t really know what was happening to him. We played a show and the day after the show, he decided to go to the hospital and they found out after three or four days of some medical testing.

Heavytothebone2: How have you felt about the reaction to Nergal’s illness in the metal community as a whole?

Oh, it’s been great. I just feel thankful to all the people who are reacting to this whole situation really nice; all this bone marrow transplant situation. People are registering at the bone marrow bank and there are so many new people in this bank thanks to Nergal’s illness. With this whole thing, we can help more people to get better. The reactions are just great. We’re all surprised. Just to give you an example, the bone marrow transplant bank in Poland had about 50,000 people registered. Within the last three weeks, it’s been 17,000 people new registered to this bank. It’s a massive impact.

Heavytothebone2: You’ve toured with countless bands over the years. Is there one band from the past or present that you wish you could tour with?

Well, I was always waiting to play a show with Metallica and it just recently happened. There’s a few we always wanted to, but never had a chance to go tour with, but at the same time, there’s so many bands that I would never imagine we would play a show with and we had this chance. We played a show with Metallica, we played a show with Iron Maiden, and we played a tour with Morbid Angel, King Diamond. Just the biggest and best bands in the world, so I’m really happy about that.

Lamb of God's Chris Adler Talks About His book, Drum Clinic tour, and Mapex Drums

Band Photo: Lamb of God (?)

Lamb of God’s Chris Adler has been around the world and back several times and even has drum kits waiting on him in three different countries. Aside from the band and launching ReThink Records almost on his own, Adler has taken to writing and publishing a memoir/drum tablature book, titled "The Making of New American Gospel, Drum Tablature, Short Stories, and Reflections." As if he wasn’t busy enough between that and Lamb of God, the veteran drummer is about to go on a drum clinic tour through the US, called the "Throne with a View" tour.

Adler also managed to have some time to tell MetalUnderground.com a little about these things in an interview. We even recorded the telephone interview, streaming below.

Frank Serafine (Progressivity_In_All): Well, first off, I just wanted to go ahead and see if we can talk a bit about your new self-published book out, titled, "The Making of New American Gospel, Drum Tablature, Short Stories, and Reflections." Can you tell us a little about what readers can expect to hear in this book?

Chris Adler: Well, I guess it’d be better to kind of explain how it came to be, which would shed some light on what you’re asking. It’s been now, gosh, 11 years since that album came out – 12 years since we wrote it – and we’re very fortunate to have had the career that we have. For years, my family and friends kept telling me that I should write down all these experiences that we were having because I was going to forget them, and it’s not everybody that gets to do all this stuff. On the last, maybe, year of the tour that we did on the last album, I found myself spending a lot of time alone in hotel rooms across the world. There was not a lot to do, so I decided to start writing stuff down. They were right, I was remembering things kind of out of order and as I wrote things, I remembered others that I had kind of forgotten.

Slowly, the topics came together and I realized that, as I was writing, I was very much writing it as if it were to be read. It wasn’t just a historical outline for myself. It was very much a story that I was writing – maybe for my wife, maybe for my kids, who knows. I just kind of continued with that and told the story of how we became a band and what I was thinking when we wrote these songs, what I saw around us at the time, what it was like going to the studio, how we chose the studio, how we chose the producer, the experience that we had while in the studio... Then I went into each individual song and spoke about that and how we wrote it, kind of where my head was at with each different song, what was difficult about it, what was easy about it, and if it worked later when we played it live at shows or how long it stayed in the set list.

Then, a buddy of mine, Paul Waggoner from Between the Buried and Me, who had filled in for our guitar player Mark, on one of the tours that we did in South America, had done a tab book (tablature book) for guitar for a Between the Buried and Me album, and I thought it was really cool that he had done it. I’ve seen these big companies do these tablature books and they rarely, if ever, check with the artist just to verify if this stuff is right. We have even seen Lamb of God books that are just straight-up wrong on guitar. So I thought it would be cool to do a drum tablature. There really isn’t much of a standard for that kind of thing, and I don’t know that anybody would want it, but before somebody else did it, I figured I’d do it myself and make sure that it was right.

So it’s kind of a mix of two things that don’t necessarily mix, but there is really accurate drum tablature in there in case you want to play the songs, and then there’s the story of kind of the making of the album, song by song, and a general overview of where the band was at at the time and what we were into, hoping for, and thinking. That kind of wraps it all up.

The idea is that I’m going to write 5 or 6, 7 of these things – one for each album – and I’m finished with the second album. I’ve finished the tablature for the third album, "Ashes of the Wake," and I’m going to start writing that story while I’m on this clinic tour that’s coming up. The goal is to have one of these books for each one, the way I remembered everything going down. Each guy in the band remembers things differently than I do, so this is kind of just my somewhat-related stories.

FS: Right, so it’s kind of like a big epic series that’s going to be part memoir, part instruction.

CA: Yeah, I thought that when I was writing. At some point down the line, I am certainly interested in doing a massive memoir of the band and my experience in it and throughout it. I didn’t want this to necessarily take that place or somehow steal that idea, so I think this might be a fifth or a sixth of that whole story. Maybe when all the books are done, I’ll go back and take the "making of" parts and put them all together, which kind of would make the whole story kind of come together, and then add or subtract detail as needed from the much larger project at that point.

So this is something I hadn’t intended to be the be-all-end-all story of the band, but through that record, this was my perspective on it.

FS: I guess some people might not know, given the fact that we’re such a corporate culture, but this is actually self-published and financed by you as well. This book and all the drum tablature is straight from you, is that correct?

CA: Yeah, I’m kind of a (you can ask my wife) control freak and I’ve always been really hands-on with the Lamb of God stuff. I always tried to make sure that our product quality was the highest it could get. I didn’t really want to let go of this thing. Number one, because the model of what we’re talking about really isn’t out there. There’s nobody mixing memoirs with musical tablature – and I’m not trying to start some sort of revolution or something, but there’s not really an avenue for it.

At the same time, I really wanted to have the quality control over it so I hired the artist that does the Lamb of God stuff. I’ve worked with him on the art that you see in the book, the pictures in the book, paid the photographers for those, and obviously I wrote the whole thing myself. I didn’t get a ghost writer or ask anybody to try to remember things that I couldn’t remember myself.

I just wanted to be able to do it myself. The goal certainly was not to make a million dollars with it – I don’t know that anybody’s really interested in it. Again, this is just me making sure I didn’t forget all this stuff. It’s a really really nice way for me to remember, I guess. (laughs)

FS: I have to agree. Switching gears a bit with your drumming, you’ve had a long history with Lamb of God and Mapex drums. Your endorsement began back in 2004, is that correct?

CA: Yep, exactly. On Ozzfest 2004, we brought out my first Mapex kit and I remember the first day we had it, I had a buddy of mine who was a really great drummer and a great drum tech at the time. He actually lived with me for awhile and he was my drum tech. We both partied until late at night and he’d wake up at 8 or 9 in the morning getting things ready and making sure that the stage was set and everything. I would roll out of bed sometime around the same time the band did, maybe noon or two in the afternoon, and stumble over to the drum kit and prop it up. I remember we were on that Ozzfest with Slipknot and I remember the guy coming over – their drum tech – and complaining, not about my drum tech, but that "it's unbelievable that this guy can roll out of bed obviously intensely hung over and still have the best-sounding drum kit on the entire tour." (laughs) I was like, "Man, this Mapex kit really kicks ass."

FS: Right. Now that is a significantly different kit than you’re playing on right now. This kit that you’re going to be using for your drum clinic tour will be a Mapex Black Panther "Blaster" drum set, am I right?

CA: Yes. They gave me one at the end of last year and I started checking it out.

FS: Can you tell us a little about what’s changed from your last kit to this Black Panther "Blaster" kit?

CA: Yes, it’s really kind of all in the details. I normally use and have been using the Mapex Saturn kit. The standard for high-end kits is all-maple kits and the Saturn kit is all-maple, but it has a layer or ring of walnut around the inside of each drum. For me, that walnut provides a really dark crisp tone to each drum. So even the small toms I have on the drum kit, I don’t have to tune them really high to get a nice kick out of the drums. They can be tuned down really low. For metal and hard rock and what I tend to do for a living, I don’t really want drums that sound like Miami Vice, I really need that kind of fast, hundred miles an hour, everything-going-at-the-same-time really dark quick power, and the walnut provided that for me.

On the Blaster kit, what they did was they made the all-maple shell and removed the walnut layer from the inside but made two walnut hoops that surround each drum head on both sides – I guess the beater side and the response side. So basically, it provides the exact same thing. It’s kind of a different configuration and a much nicer finish on the drums themselves. It’s a really beautiful kit. I know some people like the sparkles and the big colors and all that stuff, but I’ve really always been a fan of all beautiful natural wood and this reminds me of somebody’s grandmother’s beautiful dining room table. You’d feel almost bad hitting this thing. It’s just a beautiful piece of work.

FS: How many kits and custom drums have you gone through over the years? Can you recall exactly how many?

CA: Let’s think about that. Well, when you think, "gone through," I have not gotten rid of any and none of them have ever really fallen apart. I still have all of them. I’ve got one that stays in Australia. I’ve got one that stays in England for European and English tours. I’ve got one in New York for US tours. I’ve got one in my rehearsal space right now that I’m using to prepare for the clinic and the next Lamb of God record, and I’ve got two in my basement. I lost track somewhere in there, but it sounds to me like 5, 6, 7 kits here and there.

FS: These are all the same kit?

CA: All Saturn kits. We did "New American Gospel" and the Burn The Priest record with a Pearl Prestige Select kit. So I went from there to the Mapex a little later. Everything after 2004, the bulk of my kits around the world have been Mapex Saturn kits.

FS: Your "Throne with a View" clinic tour begins on the 28th in Salt Lake City, UT and ends on March 16th in Hollywood, FL. What’s in a typical Chris Adler drum clinic? Do you focus on any specific styles techniques, or tell stories and really interact with the audience?

CA: Yeah, it’s new to me, too. I did the Modern Drummer festival in 2005, which was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Modern Drummer festival is kind of like the Super Bowl for drum clinics, right? I never had done a drum clinic before, so it was like, immediately, I got thrown into the big game and it scared the shit out of me, and I seemed to do pretty well at it. People kind of appreciated my perspective, which was a little bit different.

Willie and I did the Battle (clinic) thing across Europe in 2008, I think. This is kind of a continuation of that, where it’s going to be probably less technical. I’m not going to have hand-outs or tests or anything like that. I’m going to tell my story about how I started, talk about the gear that I use and why I use it, and I really am hoping for a lot of interactiveness… interactiveness, that’s not a word… interaction with the people that come because I don’t want to pretend to teach anybody anything. I’ve never had a drum lesson and I don’t think I could teach anybody how to play. I hope that, in the end, I inspire people to want to go and play as well, but that’s probably the most I could hope for.

I’m probably going to play 8 or 9 Lamb of God songs, talk about those songs, talk about the guys that inspired me to play, and then just kind of hang out and answer whatever might come up – how I got to where I am, touring the world, wherever. Rarely, if ever, does anybody ask me really specific drum questions. Nobody comes up to me and says, "Hey Chris, how can I get my snare diddles faster?" They’re far more interested in "What was it like when you were recording this album?" or "What happened when you guys played in China?" For me, these are far more interesting stories.

Now, I’m doing a drum clinic, so I know there’s going to be a technical aspect to that, and I’m certainly going to be able to share my warm-up tips and things that I think about when I’m writing songs. It’s more the technical aspect of what I do, but I’m a little less clinical, a little less up-tight and school-oriented. It’s more just kind of a hang-out.

FS: That’s very well-put. For MetalUnderground.com, we like to give a spotlight to the underground bands and sort of give a helping hand to underground metal bands. Are there any drummers that inspired you to play better than you were playing that you can give away right now?

CA: Yeah, there’s several guys. That’s interesting that you ask. I’m certainly well-versed in metal drumming and I admire the guys that are at the top of their game in metal drumming. There’s guys out there that just absolutely hands-down play circles around me. I know that I’ve been very fortunate to get where I am and I’m not delusional. I’m very much aware that there are guys out there that are significantly faster, stronger, and smarter in every way around the drum kit, but for me it’s always been about stylistic choices and the difference that I can make to a song in my particular band. It was never about being the fastest or anything like that.

So when I started playing, which was a little bit late, around 21, I had already had gone through those teen years where you idolize a certain band or certain guy or you fall in love with an instrument. I definitely enjoy playing drums, but it’s not, for me, the be-all-end-all. So, when I got around to listening to hear what I liked or didn’t like about certain drummers, it wasn’t about a particular band was cool. It was more about what the drummer was offering. It wasn’t even drummer-specific. It wasn’t always just metal players.

For example, like Stewart Copeland of The Police. Incredible player. Not because he’s showing off all the time, but because he’s offering something to that band where, if you took him out of that band, there’s no way that band would sound the same. He helps elevate the music by creating that voice on his instrument. There’s another guy, Billy Cobham, who played with the Mahavishnu Orchestra for several years and did the same thing.

As far as metal, which I’ve always been a fan of, guys that I thought were doing something unique and different, and made me want to play, first and foremost, was a band called Wrathchild America. The guy, Shannon Larkin, now plays with Godsmack and has played with a million people since the Wrathchild days. The stuff he did with Wrathchild America was the same kind of thing that any great drummer does – he was really elevating that music with his voice on the drum kit.

Another guy, Steve Shelton, who played with a band called Confessor, who never really had massive success, but this guy’s probably one of the most underrated and talented metal drummers I’ve ever seen in my life. He made me want to just learn as much as I could from watching him play and made me want to play the drums every day. And of course, there’s the masters out there just killing, guys like Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo. I think they’re geniuses at what they’ve accomplished. In all of that, I certainly hope in the end that I can offer some sort of unique style.

FS: Lastly, is there any instructional DVD in the works? Any talks of that?

CA: I have been approached by several companies that do that kind of thing, and I think, after doing the book on my own, and while it’s not by any means a runaway success, I think people that know and have picked it up are definitely enjoying it, and it seems to be doing better than I ever thought it would, and I’m very happy with that. Now I’ve got a little bit of confidence on doing something like that on my own.

Showing up on a sound stage and having a production guy telling me "do this" over and over… I don’t want it to be this DIY easy thing, either. I want to have a big production value, because nobody’s going to know better than me what makes my playing different than the next guy. If I was going to do a DVD, I would certainly want to highlight those things and I think I would have the best idea on how to do that. That said, I think, at some point down the line, if I can find the time between all this other stuff that’s going on, between the books and the clinic tours, and the next Lamb of God record, I would really really like to do that.

I think it’d be fun, too, to add with each book going backwards, once the books are done, to add the DVD showing how to play the songs on those records and how I wrote it and that kind of thing. Maybe I’ll put it all on one, who knows, but yes, it’s definitely something in mind.

Siapakah Dajjal?

Sifat Badannya:

Kedua: Tertulis didahinya tulisan “Kafir (Kaf-Fa-Ra)”.

Kami bertanya: “Wahai Rasulullah! Lalu kami bertanya lagi: Wahai Rasulullah saw!
Bukan mengikut perjalanan matahari seperti biasanya kitalakukan. Misalnya sudah berlalu tujuh jam selepas sembahyang Subuh pada hariitu maka masuklah waktu sembahyang Zohor, maka hendaklah kita sembahyangZohor, dan apabila ia telah berlalu selepas sembahyang Zohor itu tiga jam setengah misalnya, maka masuklah waktu Asar, maka wajib kita sembahyang Asar Begitulah seterusnya waktu Sembahyang Maghrib, Isyak dan Subuh seterusnya hingga habis hari yg panjang itu sama panjangnya dgn masa satu tahun dan bilangan sembahyang pun pada sehari itu sebanyak bilangan sembahyang setahun yg kita lakukan. Begitu juga pada hari Kedua dan ketiga.

Fitnah Dajjal:

Juga Kartu Remi, jumlahnya 13 (As, 2-9, Jack, Queen, King).

Inilah buktinya:

Friday the 13th adalah Hari sial?

Dan menurut laporan dari “The Stress Management Center and

Biar yg makan jadi 15, kalau tidak, “It is believed that one of the 13 diners will die within a year. Begitu wanti2 sang manager.

Tiap Detik Pria Produksi 1500 Sperma
